Enzo Ferrari was born on 18 February 1898 in Modena, Italy, where he died 90 years later in 1988.
After the First World War he became a racing driver until 1924 when he returned to Alfa Romeo as sporting director until 1939. At the same time, in 1929, he founded Scuderia Ferrari to support private owners and top drivers of Alfa Romeo cars. In 1933, the workshops moved from Modena to Maranello. In 1935, the first single-seater designed entirely by Ferrari, the Bimotore, left his workshops. In 1939, he left Alfa Romeo, bought in 1933 by Mussolini's state, to regain his freedom. But the Second World War broke out and the Ferrari workshops were forced to manufacture machine tools until 1945. And it was not until 1947 that the first Ferrari 125 S won the first Ferrari victory on the Rome circuit. After the death of his son Dino at the age of 24 in 1956, he tended to remain cloistered in his office or home. Charismatic, with a gift for organisation, he was stubborn, tough and determined. Year after year, he built up the most prestigious list of victories in motor sport. When his wife Laura died in 1978, he recognized Piero Lardi, his son born from a hidden union in 1945.
