DESCRIPTION AND COMPOSITION
With a foreword by Hervé Poulain, this eleventh comic book dedicated to the 24 Hours of Le Mans revisits a visionary project in the very year that BMW makes its grand return to Le Mans with a new Art Car created by Ethiopian artist Julie Mehretu.
*Comic Book in French
A true aesthete, auctioneer Hervé Poulain is also a speed and motor racing enthusiast. As a young amateur driver, he had always dreamed of participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and thought this dream unattainable… until the day he shared his idea with BMW Motorsport management to promote art by entrusting contemporary artists with the livery of racing cars. The German manufacturer was captivated by the project and offered to provide one of its 3.0 CSLs on the condition that no other sponsor be present on the bodywork and that BMW remain the owner of the car after the race. This is how, in 1975, the concept of "Art Cars" was born, with a first car painted by Alexander Calder which caused a sensation at the Le Mans event. In subsequent years, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol succeeded Calder, and even if no car reached the podium, it remained a huge victory for Hervé Poulain who succeeded in his challenge: to combine competition, design, and art. True rolling works of art, these unique pieces are now preserved at the BMW Museum in Munich.
