Le Mans 24 Hours 1999 Comic Strip
On June 12, 1999, in the Indianapolis section of the Le Mans 24 Hours circuit, the Mercedes CLR No. 5, traveling at over 300 km/h, lost downforce and began to take off like an airplane, then spun three times in the air before crashing into the trees at the side of the track. It was one of the most famous and spectacular accidents in modern motor racing. No one believed for a second that the driver was alive. Pace cars and safety personnel rushed to his aid. Yet, to everyone's astonishment, Peter Dumbreck escaped unharmed.
The 1999 edition, marked by this spectacular accident, will also remain as the race that saw all the greatest manufacturers compete one last time before the end of the century.
