The Porsche 917 was created with the aim of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, it had to compete in Group 4 with the powerful Ford GT40, Lola T70 and Ferrari 512 S.
Designed by Ferdinand Piëch, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche.
The 917 is the culmination of Porsche's work at the highest level of competition. Thanks to this prototype, developed with the help of the greatest drivers of the time (Rodriguez, Siffert, Redman, Piper, etc.), Porsche could finally aim for victory in the overall classification of the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours, and even win the endurance championship. The Ford GT40s, after 4 years of domination, are aging, the Matras are still too young. On the other hand, Ferrari, with its new 512 S and its talented drivers, is a scarecrow and will make it difficult for Porsche. But nothing can stop a legend from being written, especially at this speed!
